Abstract Tapestry Weaving, Jul. 25-27 (Fri/Sat/Sun), 10-4pm, Catskill

Class Description:
Abstract Tapestry Weaving will cover the basics of abstract tapestry weaving on a Schacht 4-harness floor loom. During the first day of the class, participants will learn how to wind a warp, set up their own floor looms, and how to weave basic plain weave. During the second- and third-day participants will be taught various weft-faced and open weave tapestry techniques, using woven examples and visual references such as the work of Sheila Hicks as inspiration.The emphasis is on abstract patterning and woven innovation (as opposed to woven pictorial based imagery).The class will conclude with finishing off the edges of the weaving and studio clean-up. All materials and equipment are included, but feel free to bring any additional weft material that you would like to experiment with.

Margot Becker is an artist, weaver, and educator based in Hudson, NY. Her work explores sense of place, the natural environment, and the connection between the individual and the communal subconscious. Through tactile processes, she questions our understanding of sustainability, the value of labor and the role of handcraft in late capitalism. Her weaving practice originated from a desire to understand the origins of cloth and the lives affected by it. In 2010, Margot embarked on a study to understand the process of creating textiles from start to finish. Following the belief that to know your production line, you must be your production line, this project became an all-encompassing life practice- incorporating animal husbandry, yarn spinning technologies and fine hand weaving. Her work has been exhibited in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She received her BA in studio art from Bard College in 2009 and her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2020

Due to the small class size for in-person workshops and the limited number of looms, each person makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and cancelling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:
There are no refunds for class fees. However, if the cancellation is 30 or more days before the start of the workshop, you have the option of rescheduling for a different class free of charge. If the cancellation is fewer than 30 days from the start of the workshop, there is the option of rescheduling only if your spot is filled from the Waitlist or another person. You also have the option of transferring your class reservation to another person at any point. The closer the start date, the more difficult it can be to fill a spot from the Waitlist.
