Imrprovisational Quilt Workshop, Aug. 16 (Sat), 10-4pm, Catskill

$160.00

Instructor: Susan Chiappini

Class Description:

Improvisational Quilt Making: It’s a freeing creative process meant to allow students to play with the unexpected. No rigid patterns, templates or precision measuring here. Instead, we’ll work in a loose and freeform quilting style focusing on the creative process while maintaining solid design concepts.

Students will sew patchwork quilt blocks without the limitations of traditional patterns with results that are often surprising and unexpected. The morning will focus on creating liberated patchwork blocks. In the afternoon we’ll move on to design elements that can help create a cohesive overall quilt top.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing machines as long as they are in good working order. There are studio several machines available for student use, but they need to be reserved in advance.

Level: Participants should have basic sewing skills. Email info@catskillweavingschool.com if you are unsure.

Instructor Bio:

Susan Chiappini is a self taught quilt artist and educator living in Rhinebeck, NY. Her designs explore the use of color and print in traditional American patterns as well as in improvisational patchwork. She sees quilts as an art form that enhance domestic spaces with warmth and the spirit of the hands that made them. Her work has been supported by residencies at the Penland School of Craft. Spending Summer as the farm kitchen supervisor at Montgomery Place Orchards in Red Hook NY, Susan enjoys the winter months in her home studio with sewing, teaching and studying quilt history. In addition to teaching quilt making skills, she holds cooking workshops that focus on nutrition education. A scientist at heart, she holds a PhD in human physiology from the Medical College of Virginia, and studied nutrition at Columbia University.

Cancellation Policy:

Please consider carefully before signing up for one of our classes or purchasing a class for another person.  Due to the small class size for in-person workshops and the limited number of looms, each person makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and cancelling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot.  If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:

There are no refunds for class fees.  However, if the cancellation is 30 or more days before the start of the workshop, you have the option of rescheduling for a different class free of charge.  If the cancellation is fewer than 30 days from the start of the workshop, there is the option of rescheduling only if your spot is filled from the Waitlist or another person.  You also have the option of transferring your class reservation to another person at any point.  The closer the start date, the more difficult it can be to fill a spot from the Waitlist.

No refunds will be given on gift certificates.  (Updated 04/24/2025)
