Class Description:
The Ohio Star quilt pattern is a timeless, classic American quilt design popularized in the early 19th century. Consisting of a nine patch arrangement of quarter square triangles around a central square, the design is perfect for expanding the skills of any experienced quilter or advanced beginner. However; if you are new to quilting, but know how to use a sewing machine, consider joining us to work on your skills in cutting and piecing half and quarter square triangles.
During the first half of the day we’ll work on precision cutting and piecing skills to assemble the half square triangles (HSTs) into quarter square triangle (QST) blocks. After a lunch break the experienced quilters will move on to assembling the QSTs and central squares together to form the Ohio Star block while the newer sewists will have the option to continue honing their piecing and machine skills of the component parts. We’ll also cover how to add sashing to your blocks to expand the overall quilt design. Expect to leave class with a good working knowledge of precision cutting, pressing and machine skills that will prepare you for success in almost any quilt pattern. Susan Chiappini is a self taught quilt artist and educator living in Rhinebeck, NY. Her designs explore the use of color and print in traditional American patterns as well as in improvisational patchwork. She sees quilts as an art form that enhance domestic spaces with warmth and the spirit of the hands that made them. Her work has been supported by residencies at the Penland School of Craft. Spending Summer as the farm kitchen supervisor at Montgomery Place Orchards in Red Hook NY, Susan enjoys the winter months in her home studio with sewing, teaching and studying quilt history. In addition to teaching quilt making skills, she holds cooking workshops that focus on nutrition education. A scientist at heart, she holds a PhD in human physiology from the Medical College of Virginia, and studied nutrition at Columbia University.

Cancellation Policy:
Please consider carefully before signing up for one of our classes or purchasing a class for another person. Due to the small class size for in-person workshops and the limited number of looms, each person makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and cancelling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:
There are no refunds for class fees. However, if the cancellation is 30 or more days before the start of the workshop, you have the option of rescheduling for a different class free of charge. If the cancellation is fewer than 30 days from the start of the workshop, there is the option of rescheduling only if your spot is filled from the Waitlist or another person. You also have the option of transferring your class reservation to another person at any point. The closer the start date, the more difficult it can be to fill a spot from the Waitlist.
