Sculptural Basketry, Aug. 22-24 (Fri/Sat/Sun), 11-5pm, Catskill
Instructor: Dee Clements
Class Description:
Join artist Dee Clements for a weekend workshop exploring sculptural 3D weaving with basketry reed. In this class, participants will learn and apply basket weaving techniques to create three-dimensional forms, structures, and vessels. We will begin by weaving a lashed round base and practicing different weaving techniques, introducing plain and dyed colored reeds to explore how these techniques can create various patterns. Additionally, we will investigate form and structure, examining sculptural basket work from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Participants will have the opportunity to create small-scale projects, either using molds and formers or working freehand. The emphasis will be on using basketry techniques to explore pattern, form, structure, and sculptural ideas.
This class is ideal for those looking to incorporate basket weaving into their work, as well as beginners interested in exploring a new craft. Bring your imaginative ideas, creative spirit and willingness to play without judgement! No prior experience is required.
The $40 materials fee is included in the class fee. Each participant will receive 2 lbs of undyed reed and ½ lb of hand-dyed reed to use during class and take home. Additional tools, such as scissors and packing tools, will be provided for use during the class. There will also be a packet with info and resources for everyone to take home as well.
Level: All levels

Cancellation Policy:
Please consider carefully before signing up for one of our classes or purchasing a class for another person. Due to the small class size for in-person workshops and the limited number of looms, each person makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and cancelling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:
There are no refunds for class fees. However, if the cancellation is 30 or more days before the start of the workshop, you have the option of rescheduling for a different class free of charge. If the cancellation is fewer than 30 days from the start of the workshop, there is the option of rescheduling only if your spot is filled from the Waitlist or another person. You also have the option of transferring your class reservation to another person at any point. The closer the start date, the more difficult it can be to fill a spot from the Waitlist.
No refunds will be given on gift certificates. (Updated 04/24/2025)
